TESTIMONIAL

I didn’t know Drew or JT before I showed up at Valwood. I had hired Drew to back me up on one show and we had played together a handful of times, but we were essentially strangers. But from the first day of this project, these guys have been nothing but professional and inspiring. They immediately recognized where I wanted to take this album, adding their own touches as players and producers, but never stepping beyond what they knew I was looking for.

These guys have played together for a long time and you can tell. Drew laid down anything and everything I was after on drums and percussion- tambourine, shakers, claves, snaps, you name it. Mind you, I am a drummer. Drums are my first instrument. I’m very opinionated about drum sounds, feel, etc. and I was never disappointed with Drew’s groove or swing. He also plays keys on all but one song.

JT is a monster on bass. With a clear command of the instrument and a precise ear for what a song needs, this guy also hit the mark every time. Big tone, fabulous runs, and never more than exactly what was prescribed. He also contributed guitar to the album, tasteful licks with just the right combination of weird and melodic.

What’s more, Drew and JT both know engineering and song construction. They know their space, their gear, and how to put together all the elements to make you sound your best. JT sits in the chair, manning the controls, but both will offer ideas, suggestions, and an honest sounding board for your own ideas if that’s the way you like to work. I had a good idea of what I wanted to produce, but without a doubt, these songs sound better for the contributions Drew and JT brought. No doubt.

I’ve been in professional studios as a drummer. I’ve even recorded a song or two of mine in basement studios. But I’m not a professional. What I am is obsessive, and for once in my life, committed to being as patient as is necessary to get the best product. Drew and JT showed great patience as I struggled at times to find my vocal pitch or when scheduling issues popped up as we recruited horn players, guitar wizards, etc. These guys are cool and relaxed. They know that not every day will be your best day in the studio. But they are also professional, and want to maintain a pace that produces results. They’re fun to work with. You will leave with an excellent product representative of your talents and what you hope to achieve. Hire them, but get out of the way when I’m ready to record again, because I’ll definitely be back to Valwood Studios.
